I’m just doing me ☺️

I am incredibly motivated and an incredible procrastinator. A big spender on travel who will book a flight with no hesitation, but also reuse ziplock bags 100 times and wear my old running shoes down until there’s nothing left. A late sleeper who unfortunately loves early morning activities. The last person to go home and the one who will unfortunately encourage you to stay out later than you planned. A big hugger. An even bigger hopeless romantic. The biggest dreamer and a shameless optimist and if that makes me impractical, well, I no longer care.

Because once isn’t enough ☺️

I love returning to places over and over again, and building familiarity over time. So maybe it’s fitting I share a few things I tell people who plan to come back to Oahu for a second visit. The second visit anywhere is always magical, because you’re usually focusing less on the “must-see sights” and more on being present, being curious, and taking it all in.

How I spent my 32nd turn around the sun 👉

All I wanted this year was to be offline, notification-free, and outside. What a change from 2 years ago (remember my 30th birthday - Yacht Week in Greece? 🤪). This year, we road tripped from Big Sur to Tahoe, and saw some good friends in the Bay in between 🙌🏽 there was wine tasting, paddleboarding, hiking, beach time, lake swims, and lots and lots of reading.

Sometimes I wonder when I’ll know, definitively, who I am. What I like, what I dislike, who I want to be “when I grow up.” What age I’ll finally realize once and for all what makes me, me.

But the beauty of it is in the “all” not the “either.” I am someone who likes to celebrate her birthday at a festival with friends and stay up until sunrise, as much as I am someone who likes the solitude of a good campfire and 9 hours of sleep and some just-add-water mac n cheese. I am spontaneous and at times rigid. I have it together and still have no idea what I’m doing. I am all of it, all at once.

I love that at 32 I haven’t chosen one thing to “be.” Every possibility and version of me still exists. Is still waiting to be met. What a privilege that will be.

Thank you for the birthday wishes and for the love this week!!! You all are amazing and my heart is full. PSA that Virgo season is still summer (don’t @ me - I won’t stand for the pumpkins just yet) so make sure to get outside this weekend if you can ☺️

Small things, maybe, but they felt grand to me 💍

When we started planning our wedding, we got overwhelmed pretty quickly by all the minutiae and seemingly small details that piled up 😅. It’s true what they say – planning a wedding can absolutely feel like a full-time job. At first, I questioned what the heck we were doing. How much do 80 chargers cost? Why is the gold cutlery always extra? Do we want a cake? Do people really need to sit in chairs? 😂

You see, I’m one of those people who loves attending a grand celebration, but when the time comes to ask others to celebrate me, it feels, well, terrifying 🙈 Are people really going to drive to Mexico for this? Are we asking too much? Taking up too much space?

Over time, I reframed my thinking (thank you, therapy).

I realized what a huge opportunity this was, to gather our families and friends in a very special place for the first – and maybe only – time in our lives. What a privilege it was to create such a fun weekend for our guests! And what a privilege that our love was enough reason to get people to come together in one of our favorite places on the planet.

Slowly but surely, the decisions felt more exciting and less frivolous. We were creating a world to transport our guests to.

There are many ‘wedding things’ we ultimately decided against, like cake or a champagne toast or a bouquet toss. But there are so many others we poured our hearts into. And I’m obsessed with how every little detail came together to tell our story.

Before you become a digital nomad, ask yourself these questions ⚠️

There’s a LOT of nuance here, so please take this post as some introductory food for thought – there is way more to discuss than a quick IG carousel could capture (but I welcome any thoughtful discussion in the comments!!). And of course, these issues aren’t 100% the fault of digital nomad culture. There’s a lot that can and should be said here about how local governments and destination organizations need to do a better job at empowering local communities first and foremost. As someone who grew up in Hawaii, has spent 3 years workationing around the world, and is learning spanish with a dream of one day living in Mexico, I have witnessed and struggled with my own internal monologue on the good, bad, and ugly that comes from globalization and the human quest for a better life.

But, I digress :)

If you dream of being a digital nomad, before you pack your bags and trade your cubicle for the beach, it’s a good idea to do deeper research first. Not just on where the digital nomad hubs and best wifi speeds are, but on the language, the culture, the issues, and the impact your presence will have.

3,000 videos on my phone from this weekend and this is my favorite one ☺️

Our wedding guests had to navigate an international border crossing (by car) and so many unconventional logistics in order to be here, in this exact moment, and just thinking about that makes me overwhelmed with gratitude to this day 🥹

Even though we wanted an unplugged ceremony with no phones, and neither Jacob nor I had our phones on us the entire time (which is RARE!!), we still wanted tons of unpolished videos to remember our weekend by.

So, we enlisted the help of our wedding planning team at @rusticoeventos (shout out Citali and Yvonne!!!) to take iPhone videos, and we asked our officiant and dear friend @derekbyrne7 to snap this 🫶🏽

Very happy I get to rewatch this 362517943 times whenever I want to look back and feel all the feels 🥰
