I’m Rachel, and I quit my job at the end of last year to take a real, zero-obligation career break in my 30s. and I’m on month 10 of my year-long sabbatical, right now!

this isn’t another quit your job to travel the world forever story.

Instead, my page is all about how to recognize that something needs to change, how to navigate your career, and how to take a leap of faith when you need to take a genuine break (without hurting your chances of getting hired again).

The longest road trip of my life has made me an...

outfit repeater 😅 but fortunately, I’ve got my @unboundmerino. [ad]

I’ve been living in Australia for nearly a year, and to close out my time here I wanted to see it all! So, my husband and I packed our lives into our car, Gary, and are hitting the road for the longest road trip of our lives. Planning has been all-consuming. And the long drive days? Exhausting. But the opportunity to spend these last sweet months of sabbatical simply living and seeing the beauty on this planet at our own pace? Priceless.

The last thing I want to worry about right now is what I’m wearing (and whether I’m still hireable after all this once i start looking for jobs lol 😬), so my go-to has been this, day in and day out. Easy to pack, minimal washing required, and works in all climates.

We’re driving a zillion miles across Australia, starting now, so feel free to follow along!! 🚗

My bank account may not know it, but this is the richest I’ve ever felt.

Rich because I gave myself permission to do something risky on paper. Something that doesn’t fit nicely within the trajectory of a classical “success story.” I may want a lot out of my career, and I have big dreams and plans, but I also crave soft adventure. Freedom. Play. And over the years of chasing “the dream” that’s worth celebrating on LinkedIn, I’ve lost touch with that part of me that knew how to just exist, without the accolade.

Taking this risk wasn’t about being reckless, but about continuing to prove - as much to myself as to you - that you don’t have to choose between wanting to be ambitious and craving adventure. Between looking “good on paper” and feeling good in your soul.

Make your game plan.

Not just for 20 years down the line, or even 5. But for every single day.

What’s going to force you to sign off every day at a reasonable hour?
👉🏽 for me, I need a firm cutoff otherwise I’ll always find “just one more thing” to do. signing up for yoga and dance classes and beach walks at sunset helped to pry me off my laptop and back into the world

What’s something you absolutely dream of doing in your life (not work related!) 1-5 years down the line?
👉🏽 Working backwards, how does what you’re doing today set you up to achieve that? For me, saving for a career break took 3 years and reframing work as a stepping stone helped keep me focused without burning out.

What’s something you dream of as your legacy 10+ years from now?

This past year, we made a decision to finally take

This past year, we made a decision to finally take the leap and do something that’s been a dream at the back of my mind for ages.

And it only involved leaving my stable and impressive 6-figure job, his entire roster of clients, the country we were born in, the city we called home, our friends & family, and everything we know & have built behind 😅

Looking back, I firmly do believe there are no right or wrong decisions in this life. Only things we do, or don’t do, and how we see them through. We’re on the road as we speak, learning about & seeing as much of this beautiful country as our time allows, and trying to re-learn how to be present in a crazy world that often moves too quick.

I have no idea what’s next or how we come out from this 😅 but I do know we are already forever changed by taking a break, and taking a chance, to just live.

You come miss all kinds of random, subtle things that will surprise you (like slide 4) along the way when you leave something behind.

Eye contact and a smile once felt like a forced pleasantry and now reminds me of home.

Not “home” necessarily as in a country or a creed, but the sense of unspoken belonging to a place. Of being in community with a place.

It’s been nearly 10 months since I left the states to live abroad and the funniest things cross my mind to miss.
