If you’ve ever wanted to give a solo trip in Europe a try, I do really think Spain is one of the best places for that adventure. Barcelona especially feels like a city I could get lost in for weeks and weeks and still not have had enough.

✨ Here are some more of my favorite things I did while in Barcelona:

• Wander around El Raval, one of the most multicultural neighborhoods in Barcelona and an intersection for all walks of life. Don’t miss The Cat!

• Bring some cheap wine up to the Bunkers del Barcelona and see the best view of the city!

• Explore the Hospital de la Santa Cru e Sant Pau, a lesser-known but impressive symbol of Catalonia’s Modernist architectural movement.

• Go on a walking tour and a food tour of the city (I did both of mine with @intrepidtravel Urban Adventures)
• Take a day tour of Montserrat and go wine tasting (I did mine with @walkstours / @devour_tours)

• Hike Costa Brava! I linked the exact tour in my @tripadvisor collection. Comment ‘BARCELONA GUIDE’ and I’ll DM it to you!

• Take the metro outside of the city center (to avoid the crowds / pickpockets) and go to the beach! The Playa de Llevant was my go-to.

• Eat paella! I thought paella was my least-favorite Spanish food. Turns out I’d just been eating the wrong paella in the US 😅 Go to L’arroseria Xativa!

🤪 As far as what NOT to do....

• Join large tours! Crowds of 30+ can be so challenging in such a busy city. Smaller tours always are better anyway :)

• Leave things unattended – pick-pocketing is real here and more stealthy than you’d think

• eat on La Rambla - it’s too expensive and honestly meh. There are so many better places.

• Order champagne or prosecco! if you want bubbly, it’s cava country here (and so much cheaper, too)

I know what I said yesterday, but hear me out - the Canaries are epic!! Here are some reasons visiting in the off season are actually super rewarding (swipe 👉)

If you don’t mind a bit of solitude, there’s magic to be found in the Canary Islands in the spring, when the winter sunseekers have retreated and the islands reset before summer crowds arrive.

These were a few of my favorite discoveries from my visit in early May. I always tell people – don’t sleep on low season!!! If you’re willing to adapt, you never know what you might be rewarded with 🤍 #OffDutyinSpain

A solo afternoon in Tenerife 👋

Despite being empty during my visit, this hotel is undeniably a vibe (@hotelf24) I booked it for the rooftop pool, and it did not disappoint.

Outside of traveling for work, have you ever just booked a solo getaway? What do you find in solitude?

For me... I realized on this day that Spain could very well be my last, or one of my last, solo trips before marriage 🫣 And I think, in the attempt to make it perfect, my week in the Canaries was anything but. After reflecting a bit, I think it’s because we put so much pressure on life milestones changing everything.

You’re not married. You’re ‘tied down.’

You don’t have a family. You have ‘dependents’ counting on you.

You’re not buying a home. You’re ‘settling down.’

I want to normalize the ongoing evolution of life, and not try to restrict the journey before it’s even had a chance to unfold. I hope that, wherever these words find you, you are reassured that nothing is ending. Nothing has to fade away ✨

I’m already dreaming up a solo-moon (yes, there are ‘moons’ for everything it seems and I am all for it 😂). I think there’s something so badass and special about standing firmly in your own skin and in your own company, no matter where in this wild life journey you are. xx #OffDutyinSpain

Learn from my mistakes when visiting Tenerife!

I laugh about it now, but Tenerife in the Canary Islands was truly one of my most disastrous solo trips to date. From empty hotels, to tours that wouldn’t make space for a solo traveler, to not being able to find food while working remotely, nothing seemed to go right!

I definitely laugh-cried into my cold gas station salami sandwich one night, wondering while on an empty stomach why I put myself in crazy situations like this all the time. 😅

Fortunately, I have since emotionally recovered and realize that wow, Tenerife IS beautiful. But the Canaries just need a bit more planning than your average trip to Spain.

SO, my newest Collection on @Tripadvisor shares all the things I really did love, as well as some activities I recommend so you don’t make my same mistakes.

DO NOT...
🌋 Forget to book tours and excursions ahead of time
🌋 Stay in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (if you care about easy access to the beach & tour pick-ups. However, if you want history and city life, the city is beautiful!)
🌋 Come without a flexible and adaptable mindset!

DO...
🌋 Book a hotel in Puerto de la Cruz or the south!
🌋 Rent a car, or take the Titsa bus (super easy)
🌋 Visit Teide National Park and take the cable car up to Teide Volcano’s summit
🌋 Go to the beach!
🌋 Hike in the mountains near Masca and sample Guanche cuisine

My honest assessment of workationing in the Canary Islands | ep 3

I struggled with my first trip to the Canary Islands. It was the first solo trip I actually wished ended early 🫠 which if you know me, is SO unlike me! I think it’s a beautiful place to workation and would go again, but with a bit more advance planning. And… maybe not solo 🙈

For those curious about workationing in the Canary Islands, some quick tips and my final rating below!👇🏽

💻 WiFi / Infrastructure: 8/10

🕕Time Zone: 9/10 (just 8 hours ahead of PST, and 5 hours ahead of EST!)

🤝🏽 Community: 3/10 (lonely, I was so lonely, I had nobody.....)

📸Things to Do: 6/10 – these volcanic islands are STUNNING, but a bit more challenging to navigate. Many tours won’t run if you’re solo, and going in the off season (May) didn’t help.

💃 Cultural Immersion: 8/10 – learning about the Guanche people (the islands’ original inhabitants), the whistle language of La Gomera, and the history of the Teide volcano, are so cool.

🚌 Ease of Getting Around: 3/10 – if you didn’t rent a car, there is a bus! but it is slow.

If you aren’t going during the winter (peak season), my biggest advice is to plan ahead and book a car!
