Try Something New

Rachel Off Duty: Try Something New

Last month, date night was spent eating Ethiopian food and ice cream cookie sandwiches in West LA. It was the boyfriend’s turn to surprise me, and I’ve never had a chance to try Ethiopian food before! I love trying new foods–as long as it doesn’t involve insects, snails, or mushrooms (bleh)–so I was all-in.

I picked up this denim shift dress at a Knot Sisters sample sale earlier this summer and have been dying to wear it out. If you know me, you’ll know that I love any excuse to not wear pants, and prepping for a big Ethiopian feast sounded like a reasonable excuse. The lace-up neckline, tassels, and loose shape really help to give this dress a summery, carefree vibe, and I wanted to play that up with fun shoes. Lace-up flats are a great way to add an extra kick to an outfit and help draw the eye downward, and these espadrille-esque sling-back versions are perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons out and about. The open back and the esparto rope detailing make them essential summer staples, while the black leather means I’ll be able to transition these into fall, no problem.

After an impromptu shoot, we decided to go to Lalibela Ethiopian for dinner, and we ordered sambusas (these reminded me of samosas. They’re like savory pastries stuffed with lentils and veggies and they ROCK) and a “Veggie Utopia” spread of 14 different vegetarian dishes paired with injera (sponge bread) and salad. Here, the food is meant to be shared and consumed with your hands, using the bread to help sop up all the tasty sauces and stews filled with fiery Eastern spices and chiles. The food was warm and comforting, and the meal left us feeling healthy and satisfied rather than stuffed and sluggish. But don’t take my word for it–head to Little Ethiopia on Fairfax and West Olympic Blvd if you’re in the mood to try it out for yourself.

    1. Thank you!! I agree. I was honestly surprised that these ended up being as comfortable as they are, especially since they’re 1/2 open and have the laces. I thought they’d be annoying, but once they were broken in they were perfect!
