There are a lot of paradoxes in LA. People who swear on being vegan and eating kale chips end up being the same people wearing leather and throwing trash on the ground. Girls who show up religiously on their yoga mats are the same girls getting tequila shots on the weekends (guilty). Instagram warriors are the same people who have never picked up a real camera in their entire lives. And did I mention the weather?
Each year, the weather at the beginning of the summer is, without fail, weird. We call it June Gloom – the notorious few weeks in May and June that bring moody, mild temperatures and overcast skies in the mornings and evenings, with random pockets of heat and sunshine in between. It’s a nice, but kind of off-putting time, especially when it comes to figuring out how to dress.
In my opinion, embracing the randomness is what it’s all about. In the middle of the summer (a.k.a, now), it’s hot and sweltering, so light dresses and tank tops are a given. In the winter, boots and knits are the norm. But in the in-between, anything goes. This day was one of those “gloomy,” in-between-y days. A balmy, mid-60’s morning made way for a kind-of-hot-but-still-uncomfortable day and a surprisingly windy afternoon (which, in California, is a big deal). I opted for denim cutoffs, a long-sleeved lace-up blouse that provided coverage but still felt nice and light, and some suede ankle boots. It’s often in weird, unpredictable weather that you can have the most fun with randomizing your wardrobe and making unlikely pairings that just work. The rules disappear, all bets are off, and you can just have fun with it. No second-guessing allowed.
